Silicone emollients are occlusive - that is they coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it, and do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do). Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.- Dimethicone - Dimethicone Copolyol - Cyclomethicone.
Our skin performs 7 important functions;
ABSORPTION - skin permits substances such as water and oxygen to pass through its tissues
EXCRETION - removes toxins from the body through perspiration
HYDRATION - skin contains water to keep itself soft and supple. It secretes sweat and an oily sebaceous fluid that maintains skins natural moisture balance
PROTECTION - skin shields the body from environmental agressors such as heat, cold and bacteria
REGULATION - skin helps maintain body temperature
RESPIRATION - skin takes in oxygen through the pores and releases carbon dioxide
SENSATION - nerve endings located just under the outer layer of the skin make us aware of cold, heat, pain and pleasureDimethicone blocks the skin's ability to perform 4 of these functions; ABSORPTION, EXCRETION, REGULATION AND RESPIRATION
Without the use of fillers, binders and dimethicone, the textures of our products are therefore able to work with the natural functions of the skin to:
