❤ Making Chapstick

Lip balm is truly one of the easiest and most inexpensive products to create. And making your own lip balm also lends itself to making your own solid perfume and healing balms once you understand the simple chemistry of balm making.

Chapstick was and is my lifestyle. I used to purchase chapstick the way Mormons prepare for famine. Every bag, pocket and drawer I own has a tube of chapstick hiding in it somewhere. Until one day I decided to tackle this lip balm making adventure.

On my first attempt, the balm melted when left sitting on my outdoor porch table but with a little bit of tinkering I was able to come up with a formula that stayed solid all through our long, hot island days.

2 Tablespoons beeswax pearls (also called pellets or pastilles)
1 1/2 Tablespoons pure shea butter
2 Tablespoons organic hemp oil
10-15 drops fragrant lip safe oils

Melt beeswax, shea butter, and hemp oil together in the top of a double boiler or in a heat-safe bowl in the microwave. stir continuously with a whisk. Once the ingredients has melted, remove them from heat. Whisk in essential oils. Working quickly, transfer the liquid to a measuring cup or a container with a pour spout and then divide it among four 1/2-ounce lip balm tins. Let balms cool completely until solid, about 20 minutes. Store in a cool, dry place. Enjoy!
